This demo version of StyleScript differs from the retail package. Firstly, the demo prints a descriptive header and footer on each page. Secondly, the demo is restricted to printing only the first page of a document. Finally, the demo version includes sample images, in various application formats, that demonstrate the advantages of using StyleScript.
Background
----------
StyleScript provides a genuine Adobe Level 2 PostScript interpreter for the Apple StyleWriter series printers. The interpreter resides on the Mac and replaces the standard Apple QuickDraw driver for that printer. It is most useful for people who want to print EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) files, most commonly in the form of clip art. However, PostScript also offers advantages in color calibration, dither patterns, and text handling.
System Requirements And How To Install The Demo
----------------------------------------------
Just run the installer program that has the default paper type you want to use and select the appropriate package for the Apple StyleWriter series printer you are using. Like the retail version of StyleScript, you will need a 68030 or faster Macintosh with at least 5MB of available RAM, running System 7 or later, preferably with an FPU (floating point processor). 5MB is disk space is also required. If you wish to copy all the sample images onto your hard disk, you'll need another 15MB of disk space. Otherwise you can leave the sample images on the CD. A color display is definitely recommended. With a StyleWriter connected to the Mac, select the StyleScript driver in the Chooser and create a connection. The user interface is very similar to Apple's LaserWriter 8 driver. For more detailed instructions please refer to the electronic manual included this package.
The sample images are quite large so before you open them, increase the applications' memory sizes to at least 4000K. To do this, select the application, select Get Info from the File menu, then change the Preferred Size to 4000 or higher.
Note: You cannot install more than one StyleScript driver (i.e. StyleScript 2400 and StyleScript Pro) on the same computer at the same time.
The Sample Images
-----------------
The sample images illustrate the advantage of using StyleScript to generate PostScript output on an Apple StyleWriter printer. They can be used to demonstrate the difference between using StyleScript and using the standard Apple Color StyleWriter drivers.
We have included two sets of sample files, one set is preformatted for printing on US letter, the other set is formatted for use with A4 paper. We have also included several PostScript ".ps" sample documents on the CD. These files are "ready-to-print" PostScript files, generated from the original Macromedia Freehand files. To print these files, use the Print PostScript application found in the Print PostScript folder on the CD.
The EPS files are also available in their native Adobe Illustrator format which can be imported (or "placed") in the application of your choice. They have been saved with color 72 dpi previews. Remember that not all applications can handle EPS files.

General Questions
----------------
StyleScript Speed
----------------
Generally StyleScript takes a little longer than the standard Apple driver. If the job is a plain text job, the difference can become noticable. If it is a complex graphics job, the Apple driver can take just as long as the StyleScript driver. PostScript printing requires intensive calculations and PostScript printers execute these calculations in the printer. StyleScript executes these calculations in the computer. Depending on what else is happening on the computer, printing can take longer. And of course, the faster your Mac is, the faster StyleScript will print.
StyleScript 2.1 is accelerated for Power Macintosh computers. PowerMac users should see significant increase in performance.
What is PostScript and EPS?
-------------------------
PostScript is a printer and resolution independent image-description language. This means that Encapsulated PostScript images (EPS) are scalable and portable between printers of different resolutions. An EPS file will always print at the highest quality available on the printer being used.
To take advantage of the portability and scalability of EPS images you require two things:
1. Applications that can handle EPS images, such as Adobe Illustrator and PageMaker, Deneba Canvas, MacroMedia Freehand, Microsoft Word, Nisus Writer, or Quark Xpress.
2. A printer that can handle PostScript jobs.
StyleScript is an Adobe Level 2 PostScript interpreter for Apple's StyleWriter family of inkjet printers.
StyleScript vs. Apple's StyleWriter Driver
-------------------------------------
StyleScript only improves the output quality of images printed from PostScript capable applications. Some Macintosh applications can only print lower resolution QuickDraw images. We recommend that you use the standard Apple driver to print from any program that cannot handle PostScript graphics.
Some applications, such as ClarisWorks 3.0, read EPS files but convert them to lower resolution QuickDraw images. The output quality will not improve if you print them using StyleScript.
StyleScript Use Over a Network
----------------------------
Due to our licensing agreement, StyleScript cannot be used as a network printing solution, nor can it be used as a shared printer.
StyleScript Supported Printers
----------------------------
StyleScript currently supports Apple's StyleWriter family of inkjet printers. This includes the StyleWriter II, Pro, 1200, 1500, 2200, 2400 and 2500.
QuickDraw GX version of StyleScript
---------------------------------
The current version of StyleScript is not compatible with QuickDraw GX.

Installation Notes
----------------
Installing more than one StyleScript driver on the same Mac
It is possible to install more than one StyleScript driver on the same Mac but it is not possible to use both installed drivers. The first installed driver will still appear in the Chooser but will not be functional.
We highly recommend that you remove StyleScript BEFORE installing a second StyleScript driver.
--------------------
StyleScript Folder
--------------------
For your convenience, the StyleScript Folder is automatically installed with your selected StyleScript package. This folder is located in the first level folder on your hard drive.
The StyleScript Folder contains the following items:
Read Me File/TeachText application
Quark PDF Files
Quark PDF Files
--------------
The Quark PDF Files are included for use with Quark Xpress version 3.3.1 or later. The appropriate Quark PDF File for your StyleWriter printer is automatically installed in the "For Quark Xpress users" Folder. This file MUST be installed in order for Quark to work correctly with StyleScript.
To install the StyleScript PDF file, drag the file into the PDF Folder in your Quark XPress folder on your computer. Don't forget to set the Printer Type to "StyleScript" in the Page Setup dialog before printing.
Read Me File/TeachText application
--------------------------------
The StyleScript Read Me file and the TeachText application have been included in the StyleScript Folder for your convenience. The Read Me file contains the most up-to-date information and we recommend that you keep it handy for reference or information that the manual may not contain.
Print PostScript application
-------------------------
The Print PostScript application is included on the CD in the Print Postscript folder. This application allows you to print the .ps files created when you print to file from StyleScript or other PostScript applications. Please keep in mind that this is not our software and we cannot offer support.
To print a (.ps) PostScript file:
1. Run the Print PostScript application.
2. Select the "Print PostScript" command from the File menu.
3. From the Open File dialog box select the .ps file you wish to print.
4. After making your selection, click the Open button to begin printing.
